For More Effective Interviews: The STAR Interview Technique

Selecting the right candidate during the recruitment process is critical to a company’s success. At this point, one of the effective techniques we use at PeoplePartners—the STAR Interview Technique—helps us identify standout talent among candidates.

The Fundamentals of the STAR Interview Technique

The STAR interview technique consists of four stages:

Situation: Describes a situation or task the candidate encountered.

Task: Explains how the candidate approached that situation or task.

Action: Lists the specific actions the candidate took to handle the situation or task.

Result: Summarizes the outcomes of those actions.

These four stages help recruitment professionals better understand candidates’ skills and competencies. For example, a recruitment professional interviewing a candidate for a sales representative position might ask the following question:

“Have you ever had a challenging sales experience where you needed to persuade a customer? How did you handle the situation, and what was the result?”

This question helps assess the candidate’s sales skills and problem-solving abilities. Using the STAR interview technique, the candidate might respond as follows:

“Yes, I once struggled significantly to persuade a customer to try a new product. The customer did not believe our product was better than their existing solution.
First, I tried to understand the customer’s needs and concerns. I explained why their current solution was not fully effective and how our new product could help address those issues.
Then, I provided a more detailed explanation of our product’s features and benefits. I demonstrated how it could reduce costs and improve their business processes.
Finally, I offered the customer a trial of our product. The customer accepted the offer, and after trying the product, decided to purchase it.”

This response demonstrates the candidate’s sales and problem-solving skills. The candidate made an effort to understand the customer’s needs, clearly explained the product’s features and benefits, and took the appropriate actions to persuade the customer.

Benefits of Using the STAR Interview Technique

The STAR interview technique offers several benefits for improving the recruitment process, including:

  • Enables more accurate hiring decisions. The STAR interview technique helps evaluate candidates’ performance and problem-solving abilities.

  • Makes the recruitment process more efficient. It allows recruitment professionals to assess candidates’ skills and competencies more quickly and effectively.

  • Provides feedback for recruitment professionals. The technique helps recruiters evaluate candidate performance, supporting continuous improvement and better hiring decisions.

Tips for Using the STAR Interview Technique Effectively

To use the STAR interview technique effectively, recruitment professionals should follow these recommendations:

Tips for HR Professionals When Using the STAR Interview Technique

  • Ask open-ended questions. The STAR interview technique allows candidates to describe their past experiences and behaviors through concrete examples. For instance, you might ask:“Can you share a challenging situation you experienced while working on a project within a team?”

  • Listen carefully to candidates’ responses. Paying close attention to answers is essential for evaluating skills and competencies. While listening, consider the following:

    • Did the candidate clearly define the situation or task?

    • Did the candidate take appropriate actions to address the task?

    • Did the candidate clearly explain the results of those actions?

  • Ask follow-up questions. To better understand a candidate’s response, you can ask additional questions such as:“Could you have approached this situation differently?”

This simple yet effective interview technique helps us understand not only candidates’ experiences, but also how they apply those experiences and bring them to successful outcomes.

At PeoplePartners, we use the STAR Interview Technique to identify high-performing candidates. This approach makes it easier to select candidates who best match your company’s needs and add new stars to your organization’s success story.
